FreightInsure, an Australian-founded firm, has launched an embedded insurance platform in New Zealand, offering freight customers a more flexible way to cover goods in transit as part of the booking process.
This 'pay-as-you-go' goods-in-transit insurance allows customers to instantly purchase mini policies covering each consignment for up to NZ$100,000 against loss or damage during transit, eliminating the need for underwriting annual or bulk marine policies.

The service is underwritten by HDI Global Specialty SE, which holds a financial strength rating of AA- (stable) by Standard & Poor’s and A+ (stable) by AM Best. It is available for both domestic and international freight, including parcels, cartons, and bulk goods. This innovative approach integrates seamlessly into freight carrier and third-party logistics (3PL/4PL) systems, enabling customers to select insurance much like adding travel cover to a flight or rental car booking.

Simon Schwarz, co-founder and CEO of FreightInsure, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with local freight companies and brokers to offer a modern insurance experience for goods in transit, even for low-value or one-off consignments. He highlighted that embedded insurance transforms freight protection into a service that is easy for customers to purchase, reducing disputes over lost or damaged goods while offering operators a new source of revenue.

FreightInsure first introduced embedded freight insurance in Australia in 2022 and now operates in four Asia-Pacific countries. The company believes the New Zealand market is primed for growth, driven by strong export volumes and eCommerce. Michelle Price, Chief Commercial Officer for APAC at InXpress, noted that the company's New Zealand franchisees are already benefiting from FreightInsure’s platform, describing the service as simple, efficient, and seamlessly integrated, making it easier for franchisees and customers to protect their shipments while streamlining day-to-day operations.

Fiona Marshall, Director of Freight People, which works with trans-Tasman businesses to optimize freight and logistics operations, stated that FreightInsure fills a clear gap in the market. She emphasized the speed and ease of the claims process, noting that getting claims paid quickly allows businesses and their customers to stay focused without unnecessary disruption.

Claims for FreightInsure policies are handled by FreightSafe, one of Australia’s largest independent claims managers for the transport industry. FreightInsure has been recognized as a Top Insurance Employer 2025 by Insurance Business and has been a finalist for the ANZIIF Insurtech of the Year award each year since 2023.

This launch signifies a significant advancement in the freight insurance landscape, offering New Zealand's freight industry a more adaptable and customer-centric approach to goods-in-transit coverage. By integrating insurance directly into the booking process, FreightInsure is setting a new standard for convenience and efficiency in freight protection.
